Four Things that Make Google+ a Boon for Job Hunting

Four Things that Make Google+ a Boon for Job Hunting

Google+ is stocked with a few advantages over other social media sites when it comes to using it to locate a new career. For starters, it’s comparatively new, which means we can start fresh and clean without worrying about the backlog of photos at our Saturday night craziness or continued photos of our adorable puppy  that may have already cropped up on other sites. Four additional ways it can help us get hired is with its ability to:

  • Set up a professional profile
  • Set up a specific business page
  • Create a circle specifically for our job-related contacts
  • Use privacy settings to control which circles see specific content

The Set Up

So we start clean, lean and mean setting up a profile that highlights our professional experience and showcases a photo of us (without clutching a beer can or our adorable puppy in an Easter outfit). We can make our profile page even more professional if we include a catchy tagline that promotes our skills, a list of our past jobs and experience and links to other social media profiles like LinkedIN.

The Set Up Bonus

We also have the option of setting up Google+ business page that features our very own company or brand!

The “Right” Circles

Keeping our professional and personal life totally separate is easy by setting up separate circles. One circle can contain all of our Saturday night memories, another can contain Aunt Martha and mom baking holiday dinners,  and a third may contain all our professional contacts for networking and job-hunting reasons. The three never have to intersect (unless, of course, mom or Aunt Martha decide to come along with our Saturday night crowd). Then we reach out to other professionals in our field to add to our professional circle.

The Privacy Settings

To further fortify our professional image on Google+, the platform comes with specialized privacy settings we can use to show content to the general public, only specific circles or only specific contacts. That’s really good stuff to keep our professional side crisp, clean, job-worthy and, well, fully professional.
